Monday Motivation: The Potter…

Monday Motivation: The Potter…

He picks up the clay,  feels its gritty texture in His hands,
Slowly He adds water to it and as it begins to soften,
 He begins to shape it.
Impecably, He intricately designs each feature ,
Each detail unique to this creation. How marvellous that He took simple clay ,
not beautiful by any means,
…and turned it into a masterpiece…- “The Potter”©Sophia Windett

Hey guys!

Every morning at 3:39 am ( yes exactly this time), my eyes fly open. I have come to terms with the fact that this is the time that God wants me to talk to Him in prayer. So, I do… but after that, sometimes I find it absolutely impossible to fall back to sleep. So what better way to pass time, than to throw on some good old Netflix to lull me back to sleep.  As I scrolled through the endless options of shows and movies, I came upon an old classic that I love, “Ghost”.( Ghost is a movie starring the late great Patrick Swayze and Whoopi Goldberg. If you haven’t seen it, it’s definitely one you should check out)  There is a scene in the movie where Molly, one of the main characters is working on a piece of art with clay and a potters wheel ( cue “Unchained Melody”) all my 80’s babies know this timeless love scene!  ( I’ll link it right here)  What has always drawn to me to this scene is how detailed and delicate a potter has to be with clay.  One false move and the whole thing could fall apart. But if handled with care, it could be some of the most beautiful pieces of art .

In the wee hours of the morning, this had me thinking about the master potter. (God)   The bible makes many references to the potter and clay. The one that is most prevalent in my mind is Jeremiah 18.  In this chapter the prophet Jeremiah ventures down to the potters house. As he approaches him, he sees the potter working on some clay.  The clay became spoiled in his hands causing him to have to go back to the potters wheel and start over.  It was then that the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah and began to draw the analogy between what the potter was doing with the clay in comparison to what God was doing with Judah. To summarize, the Lord  is showing Jeremiah that Judah is like clay in his hands, for him to mold… or tear down if He has to.

I find it so easy to draw parallel to my life as it applies to this story.  Oftentimes, I conveniently tend to forget that my life is not my own. I am inclined to take things into my own hands and try to “mold” my life as I want it to work out. Now, you can imagine how that has been working out for me….. EPIC FAIL!

When you take things into your own hands you take the place of the potter. The potter is the one who knows the clay intimately. The Potter is the one who holds the design for that specific piece of clay. As you see with the clip I inserted earlier from the movie Ghost,  when Molly ( the master potter in this sense) was working alone, the piece was coming along nicely. Now once, Sam ( Patrick Swayze) comes in and tries to help, the whole thing falls apart.  Such as with us; when we let God ( the master potter ) do His thing,  He is able to piece the vision He had of us, His beautiful delicate  masterpiece  together. But as we humans tend to do , we are inclined to jump in and “help” thus messing up everything! Which, in turn causes the potter to go back to the drawing wheel and start over.  Sometimes He has to tear us down to remould us and make us like he intended.

Life is gonna happen. We are human! We are going to  make mistakes. We are going to crumble. But we have comfort in knowing that when we do, the potter is just waiting to put us back together. After all, what creator doesn’t want to see His masterpiece reach It’s full potential ! 🙂

The song, “The Potter’s House” (the Vashawn Mitchell version)  is one of my favourite songs.  I want to leave the lyrics here so you can read them. Powerful words. They are as follows:

In case you have fallen by the wayside of life
Dreams and visions shattered, you’re all broken inside
You don’t have to stay in the shape that you’re in
The potter wants to put you back together again
Oh, the potter wants to put you back together again
In case your situation has turned upside down
And all that you’ve accomplished, is now on the ground
You don’t have to stay in the shape that you’re in
The potter wants to put you back together again
Oh, the potter wants to put you back together again
You who are broken, stop by the potter’s house
You who need mending, stop by the potter’s house
Give Him the fragments of your broken life
My friend, the potter wants to put you back together again
Oh, the potter wants to put you back together again
You who need mending (if your heart needs mending, come on by) stop by the potter’s house (the potter’s house)
Give Him the fragments of your broken life
There’s joy… in the Potter’s house.
Joy… in the Potter’s house.Peace… in the Potter’s house.
Peace… in the Potter’s house.Love… in the Potter’s house.
Love… in the Potter’s house.

Salvation… in the Potter’s house.
Healing… in the Potter’s house.

Deliverance… in the Potter’s house.
Deliverance… in the Potter’s house.

You’ll find everything you need in the potter’s house
You’ll find everything you need in the potter’s house
You’ll find everything you need in the potter’s house
You’ll find everything you need in the potter’s house
Because the potter wants to put you back together again
Oh, the potter wants to put you back together again

You don’t have to stay in the shape that you’re in… because the potter wants to put you back together again! (My favourite lyric. )
Whatever you are going through, give it back to the potter and let Him fix it for you!
Have a blessed Monday everyone! May this week be full of joy, peace and happiness!

Style Sunday: Pearls and Polka Dots…

Style Sunday: Pearls and Polka Dots…

Hey guys!

Today’s style post features pearls and polka dots! Keep reading to see how I styled these two elements…

Today I was feeling very ladylike! I was up early this morning catching up on “Coronation Street” ( a British soap opera.. don’t laugh at me LOL) and one of the episodes featured a scene with some ladies dressed up having tea!  So that inspired my style for today, and what better way to channel your inner lady, than to throw on a fabulous set of pearls!

The pearls I chose were gifted to me in a set ( earrings and a necklace completed the set) by my dear friend as a bridesmaid gift ( Thanks Tova!)  The pearls are freshwater pearls, in. a beautiful pearl white shade. Truly timeless pieces and I absolutely love them.

I paired the pearls with these fabulous  black and white polka dot shoes that I took from my godmother years ago! We were hanging out in her room and I saw these in her closet, and knew I had to have them! Thanks Sis, G 🙂 . This shoe has a 4 inch silver stiletto heel and a pointed toe which just puts this pair of shoes in a league of its own.

I wanted to keep my outfit itself simple so that the shoes and pearls could stand out on their own! So I chose a black peplum top and a black pencil skirt. The skirt is from Forever 21 and the shirt is so ancient , I couldn’t remember where I got it if I tried! Here’s a link to a similar top:

I kept my makeup fresh faced with eyeliner( Maybelline unstoppable), Concealer (Clinique) Lips ( currant lip liner and sanctuary by Kat Von D) and Powder ( Mac NW55)

That’s it folks! Have a fabulously stylish week and remember ….

Monday Motivation: You Waited…

Monday Motivation: You Waited…

Hey beautiful people!

I hope this Monday is treating you well! Today’s post was not what I had in mind at all but when I wake up with a song on my heart that keeps looping in my head all day… well it must be for a reason. So I scrapped my original post and so here we have today’s thoughts  which deal on the topic of what it means to wait.

Dictionary.com has a number of definitions for the word wait. The ones that really stuck for me were:

  • to remain inactive or in a state of repose, as until something expected happens
  • (of things) to be available or in readiness:
  • to remain neglected for a time:
    a matter that can wait.

Keep these in mind. We will come back to them in a minute.

Have you been ready to go somewhere, and then had to pick someone up…. and then wait on them? Ooooooh that really grinds my gears! Anybody who knows me well, knows that I HATE WAITING! I’m always the first one ready, always the first to arrive at the restaurant and always the one anxiously waiting for everyone else to be ready ( all my friends can attest to this)  Waiting is just not my gift… lol pray for me!

I remember one time I slept over at my best friends house. My best friend whose dad was the pastor of my church,( and my godfather) told us he was leaving! We were procrastinating and still getting ready, not thinking that he would actually leave us. However, when we heard the van start up, and saw it backing out the driveway, our little preteen selves had to grab our shoes in hand and run down the driveway in our stockings and catch the van before it turned the corner and hit the main roads! I still laugh about it to this day and think that was the catalyst that made me so irritated with waiting- the fear of being left behind

Today I woke up with the song, “You Waited” by Travis Greene in my head.  The lyrics read:
You called out my name
Knew my past, covered my shame
This amazing grace
You’ve shown, so patiently
You’ve shown, so patiently

And You
You waited
For me, just for me
You waited
For me, just for me

Where would I be?
If You left me God
Where would I be?
If You left me God
Where would I be?
If You left me God
Where would I be?
If You left me God

But You waited, waited
You waited, waited
You waited, waited
You waited, waited

God is so patient with us. He has given us this gift of salvation that so many of us choose to ignore for so long, but He never gives up on us. Instead, He waits patiently for us to choose Him! The part of the song that simply states, ” You waited just for me..” brings to light the fact that you and me( yes little old you and me ) are so precious to Almighty God that He would wait just for us. He wants to give us all that our hearts desire, but sometimes we get in the way of His plans.  Most people would give up on someone who keeps meddling in their plans.. I know I probably would walk away! But He doesn’t… and won’t give up on us. I can’t stress the fact that God is just waiting for you to choose Him.
What would become of us if God decided to be impatient with us and give up?  The line in the song thats simply states “Where would I be, If you left me God ” is an actual cry of my heart! Where on earth would I be if God decided to treat me with the same impatience I sometimes treat him with? As I stated before I hate waiting, and God currently has me in a state of perpetual waiting… what a way to teach me a lesson! (God’s funny that way isn’t He?)

Going back to the definitions of the word wait, It may seem that life is at a standstill or
Inactive at the moment, or it even might seem that God has neglected you  for a time. But don’t give up hope! In our season of waiting, God is teaching us to trust His timing.  For us impatient people, its hard to wait and see the full picture of what God is doing. But remember while you are waiting, take heed in the fact that He is preparing you for something spectacular! So while you are waiting,  seek Him and  stay ready!!

One of the scriptures that I hold dear and that has been supporting me through my season of wait is  Isaiah 40:31 (New King James Version (NKJV)) which reads:

31 But those who wait on the Lord
Shall renew their strength;
They shall mount up with wings like eagles,
They shall run and not be weary,
They shall walk and not faint.

Theres a little chorus I love that mirrors these words and ends with the line, “teach me Lord how to wait”

Dear God,
Help us to stay patient in our season of wait. Help us to remember that your ways are not our ways and in the midst of every season, you are working things out on our behalf! Help us to remember that the season of wait, is not a forever season and better things are coming ahead! Teach us Lord how to wait!
Amen!

Whatever it is you are waiting for, wait on God! He’ll work it out ❤

Have an amazing Monday!

Monday Motivation: The Refrigerator Mindset…

Monday Motivation: The Refrigerator Mindset…

Hey guys!

I hope 2017 has started off on a good note for you! It certainly has for me! Sadly, my holiday break comes to an end tomorrow and back into the rat race of reality I go! Sigh!

During my time off ( minus the week I was travelling ) I was able to operate on my own schedule. Wake up when I wanted to, eat when I wanted to and so forth.  On one particular day, I was hungry! You know when you want something to eat, but you don’t want to cook or prepare anything for yourself? You just want to go to the fridge, pull something out and consume it!

Have you ever done this before? Be honest with me…  have you ever gone to look in the fridge and found “nothing” to eat so you closed the fridge. Yet 10 minutes later you return to the fridge once again and begin to rummage around to try to find something to eat and are once again disappointed when you find nothing? Once again you return to the fridge, and grudgingly try to piece together some semblance of a meal but something is always missing? I have to admit I’m guilty of this on a regular basis!

While thinking about this blog post, I began to ponder this very situation and began to relate it to everyday life.  Let’s look at the fridge as an analogy for life. If we never go the grocery store and fill up the fridge with new things, how can we expect to find anything to eat? We have to go to the source where we can get food to fill our fridge so our options of consumption are grand!

Such as with life! How many of us keep running back to same way of life and expect different results? Every time things go wrong, we go about fixing things the exact same way?   If we keep hanging out with the same people, go to the same places and make the same choices, how can we expect life to give us a different outcome?   Just like with a fridge  when you need to fill it up, you go the grocery store ( the source) to do just that.  With life, in order for things to change you also need to tap into a source and for me that source is Jesus! Jesus comes with things like the Bible ( which is literally a manuscript on how to live  life)  and the Holy Spirit ( who is a comforter and a protector, think of it like your spiritual conscience!)  to help fill you up!

This year It is my hope and desire to see people get out of the  refrigerator mindset. Let’s stop digging in the refrigerator and get to the grocery store! Let’s get back to the source!!

Ephesians 4 verses 21 through 24 reads:

21 Since you have heard about Jesus and have learned the truth that comes from him, 22 throw off your old sinful nature and your former way of life, which is corrupted by lust and deception.23 Instead, let the Spirit renew your thoughts and attitudes. 24 Put on your new nature, created to be like God—truly righteous and holy.

As 2017 is now upon us, let’s not go back to the old way of doing things. Do this for me right now… get up  and look at yourself in a mirror and make this vow, “I won’t go back to the way I used to be!”

The song, ” I Won’t Go Back” by William McDowell is a perfect reminder of this vow! Take a listen to it down below and have a blessed Monday!

Wednesday Weekly Reads: I finished Roots!

Wednesday Weekly Reads: I finished Roots!

Quick post today. I managed to finish Roots! I found it to be a great read. It took me a lot less time to read than I had anticipated it to! I did really look at the book as a work of “faction” ( facts that are embellished by fiction) I found it hard to actually believe that these incidents took place the way that they did simply because Mr Haley was accused of plagiarism. I think that if this story had been marketed as a work of fiction with some actual facts, the literary world, wouldn’t have been in such an uproar! However, this book has sold millions of copies and was even turned into a miniseries staring Levar Burton in 1977. Tough content, but  very much needed. You can’t know where you’re going if you don’t know where you’ve come from!

This week I started ( and have nearly completed) “Tease” by Amanda Maciel.  The synopsis of this book is as follows ( as found on amazon.com)

Emma Putnam is dead, and it’s all Sara Wharton’s fault.

At least, that’s what everyone seems to think. Sara, along with her best friend and three other classmates, has been criminally charged for the bullying and harassment that led to Emma’s shocking suicide. Now Sara is the one who’s ostracized, already guilty according to her peers, the community, and the media.

During the summer before her senior year, in between meetings with lawyers and a court-recommended therapist, Sara is forced to reflect on the events that brought her to this moment-and ultimately consider her role in an undeniable tragedy. And she’ll have to find a way to move forward, even when it feels like her own life is over.

So far a really good read! Really relevant content, especially in this social media/cyber bullying age that we live in. Well written! Awesome debut novel by Maciel.

Up next week:
Kinda leaving it up in the air. I have a bunch of library books to get through like:
– Mosquitoland by David Arnold
-All the Bright Places by Jennifer Niven

-Watch the Sky by Kirsten Hubbard
-The Walls Around Us by Suma Nova Ren
– My Heart and Other Black Holes by Jasmine Warga

I’ll pick one of those up!
Happy Reading!
