Us….

Us….

Watching CNN… looking at my Facebook feed and just really pondering the plight this world is in… just a few of my thoughts in prose…

Us

Too many of us are dying out here in the streets,
By the hands of people who don’t give a damn about keeping the peace…

Too many of us are being harassed for barbecuing or selling water
…in front of our  own building

Or sleeping in the common lounge of the institute of learning we attend
Or having a roommate do deplorable things to our toiletries instead

Or having the police called on us because we look like we don’t belong,
In the affluent neighbourhood where we’ve rented a home

The ones who said they would serve and protect ,
Are doing just about anything to break our necks #handsupdontshoot”

Too many of us are dying at the hands of thugs
Who don’t even care about our  lives,  only about selling drugs

Too many of us are dying on account of street CRED
Not worrying about who they’ve  hurt or misled

Too many of us are dying at the hands of our own
Like Rodney King said , “Can’t we all just get along?”

Too many mothers are burying their sons
Too many dreams cut short by the trigger of a gun..

Too many places are now deemed unsafe
What on earth have we done to this place??

Tupac said it best; It’s time for us to make some changes !
But some of us don’t wanna listen!

I don’t wanna listen to the CNN reports ..,
I don’t want to see the #RestInPeaceSoAndSo’s

I don’t want any more Trayvon‘s or Mike Brown’s or Juniors or Philandro’s
Being talked about on the radio…

I want to see more Harvard grads
And another black president..

I want more people to see the beauty that this culture represents!

But…

If we don’t get it together… They never will

Monday Motivation: The Potter…

Monday Motivation: The Potter…

He picks up the clay,  feels its gritty texture in His hands,
Slowly He adds water to it and as it begins to soften,
 He begins to shape it.
Impecably, He intricately designs each feature ,
Each detail unique to this creation. How marvellous that He took simple clay ,
not beautiful by any means,
…and turned it into a masterpiece…- “The Potter”©Sophia Windett

Hey guys!

Every morning at 3:39 am ( yes exactly this time), my eyes fly open. I have come to terms with the fact that this is the time that God wants me to talk to Him in prayer. So, I do… but after that, sometimes I find it absolutely impossible to fall back to sleep. So what better way to pass time, than to throw on some good old Netflix to lull me back to sleep.  As I scrolled through the endless options of shows and movies, I came upon an old classic that I love, “Ghost”.( Ghost is a movie starring the late great Patrick Swayze and Whoopi Goldberg. If you haven’t seen it, it’s definitely one you should check out)  There is a scene in the movie where Molly, one of the main characters is working on a piece of art with clay and a potters wheel ( cue “Unchained Melody”) all my 80’s babies know this timeless love scene!  ( I’ll link it right here)  What has always drawn to me to this scene is how detailed and delicate a potter has to be with clay.  One false move and the whole thing could fall apart. But if handled with care, it could be some of the most beautiful pieces of art .

In the wee hours of the morning, this had me thinking about the master potter. (God)   The bible makes many references to the potter and clay. The one that is most prevalent in my mind is Jeremiah 18.  In this chapter the prophet Jeremiah ventures down to the potters house. As he approaches him, he sees the potter working on some clay.  The clay became spoiled in his hands causing him to have to go back to the potters wheel and start over.  It was then that the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah and began to draw the analogy between what the potter was doing with the clay in comparison to what God was doing with Judah. To summarize, the Lord  is showing Jeremiah that Judah is like clay in his hands, for him to mold… or tear down if He has to.

I find it so easy to draw parallel to my life as it applies to this story.  Oftentimes, I conveniently tend to forget that my life is not my own. I am inclined to take things into my own hands and try to “mold” my life as I want it to work out. Now, you can imagine how that has been working out for me….. EPIC FAIL!

When you take things into your own hands you take the place of the potter. The potter is the one who knows the clay intimately. The Potter is the one who holds the design for that specific piece of clay. As you see with the clip I inserted earlier from the movie Ghost,  when Molly ( the master potter in this sense) was working alone, the piece was coming along nicely. Now once, Sam ( Patrick Swayze) comes in and tries to help, the whole thing falls apart.  Such as with us; when we let God ( the master potter ) do His thing,  He is able to piece the vision He had of us, His beautiful delicate  masterpiece  together. But as we humans tend to do , we are inclined to jump in and “help” thus messing up everything! Which, in turn causes the potter to go back to the drawing wheel and start over.  Sometimes He has to tear us down to remould us and make us like he intended.

Life is gonna happen. We are human! We are going to  make mistakes. We are going to crumble. But we have comfort in knowing that when we do, the potter is just waiting to put us back together. After all, what creator doesn’t want to see His masterpiece reach It’s full potential ! 🙂

The song, “The Potter’s House” (the Vashawn Mitchell version)  is one of my favourite songs.  I want to leave the lyrics here so you can read them. Powerful words. They are as follows:

In case you have fallen by the wayside of life
Dreams and visions shattered, you’re all broken inside
You don’t have to stay in the shape that you’re in
The potter wants to put you back together again
Oh, the potter wants to put you back together again
In case your situation has turned upside down
And all that you’ve accomplished, is now on the ground
You don’t have to stay in the shape that you’re in
The potter wants to put you back together again
Oh, the potter wants to put you back together again
You who are broken, stop by the potter’s house
You who need mending, stop by the potter’s house
Give Him the fragments of your broken life
My friend, the potter wants to put you back together again
Oh, the potter wants to put you back together again
You who need mending (if your heart needs mending, come on by) stop by the potter’s house (the potter’s house)
Give Him the fragments of your broken life
There’s joy… in the Potter’s house.
Joy… in the Potter’s house.Peace… in the Potter’s house.
Peace… in the Potter’s house.Love… in the Potter’s house.
Love… in the Potter’s house.

Salvation… in the Potter’s house.
Healing… in the Potter’s house.

Deliverance… in the Potter’s house.
Deliverance… in the Potter’s house.

You’ll find everything you need in the potter’s house
You’ll find everything you need in the potter’s house
You’ll find everything you need in the potter’s house
You’ll find everything you need in the potter’s house
Because the potter wants to put you back together again
Oh, the potter wants to put you back together again

You don’t have to stay in the shape that you’re in… because the potter wants to put you back together again! (My favourite lyric. )
Whatever you are going through, give it back to the potter and let Him fix it for you!
Have a blessed Monday everyone! May this week be full of joy, peace and happiness!

Black Woman, Did You Know That You’re a Queen…

Black Woman, Did You Know That You’re a Queen…

Hey guys!

Happy Monday! This weekend I was sidelined by a nasty cold that just drained all the energy from me,  so please excuse the lack of activity this past week!( and probably this one too… sorry in advance)! However,  I did mange to get out to the movies to watch “Hidden Figures” and boy am I glad that I did! What an amazing film! I encourage all women ( especially women of colour) to run out and watch this film! So empowering! I also watched the Golden Globes and was honoured to watch great talent like Viola Davis and Tracee Ellis Ross receive accolades for their work in film and television this award season… all of which inspired me to write this piece. Enjoy!

(Side note: All women are queens and are to be honoured and revered. I am a woman of colour and so often we are overlooked and overshadowed! This is just a special reminder to them)

Black Woman, did you know that you’re a Queen?
From the kinky coils of your hair  and the melanin in your skin

Skin rich as cocoa or with a caramel hue
Yellow toned beauties and deep tones too

Black Woman did you know that you are strong?
Your strength overpowers all those who have done you wrong.

Like the person who told you, you’d never be enough
Or the ones who did everything to make life rough…

Black Woman did you know that you are smart?
Your  mind is truly an impeccable piece of art!

Your wisdom surpasses them all
You turn the largest problems into nothing at all!!

Black Woman be proud
Hold your head up high

For although they may limit you
Your destiny is reaches far beyond the sky…

Black woman you were born to persevere
Through every adversity every toil, every fear

However, some black women must have forgot
That they were born to wear a crown and not to be a thot

Or a passing thought , a fleeting memory of someone not worthy
Black woman let them marvel at your beauty !

See, a black woman gave birth to a black woman who gave birth to a black woman and that woman is me…

Determined to be everything God intended me to be
A perfect design made in His own image … Black Woman take ownership of your royalty!

Black Woman…. did you know that you’re a  Queen?

Rich
Regal
Royal….

YOU…ARE…A…QUEEN! and don’t ever let anyone tell you different!

Thanks for taking the time to stop by the blog tonight! Pray my strength so I can get back to regular scheduled posting! Until next time! xoxo

We Will Fight For You…

We Will Fight For You…

Disclaimer: This post is simply how I’m feeling at the moment. I literally watched a man on camera being shot multiple times by law enforcement. Yes, All Lives Matter but let’s remember to include Black Lives in that conception…. No disrespect to anyone… ❤

Guys…. my heart is once again distraught over another senseless killing of a young black man at the hands of law enforcement. Alton Sterling… I don’t know everything about you or what happened before or after the cameras went off… all I know is that you didn’t deserve to be held down and gunned down like an animal in street… neither did Trayvon, Eric, Mike, Sean, Amadou and countless others… Pray for peace in these streets y’all……

Philippians 4:7 Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.

These are my words in a poem.

This piece is entitled, “We will fight for you”

God bless the dearly departed..
The ones who did nothing more than
Lose a battle that was started…

A war raged on men of a particular hue.
A man like your father, your son…. even you
To be protected by those who wear blue
Instead shot six times, the gunman took his cue
5 kids are fatherless too,

Can’t walk home with some skittles or some juice
They can kill you, make it look like protection from abuse
They can tell a lie the dash cam can refute… dispute
Take the case to court and it gets the boot

How long must we suffer the plight of today?
Where nowhere is safe if your melanin is darker than whitish grey
Leading you astray… astray meaning right where you are supposed to be
Minding your own business
Now they hear your pleas…

They get mad when we chant Black Lives Matter
All Lives matter they hoot and they holler

But… when do they have to worry about sending their white son to the store?
And him not returning..6 shots he’s no more

Sure, All lives matter,  but black ones do too
Alton, Mike, Trayvon, Sandra
We will fight for you

No justice NO PEACE
Know Justice Know PEACE

No conviction rings true….
Eric, Sean Amadou
We will fight for you

Judgement is not ours
Let PEACE abound too

Tamir, Freddie, Kimani..
We will fight for you…
WE WILL fight for you…
WE WILL FIGHT FOR YOU…

I pray for peace and comfort for those who have lost loved ones to senseless crimes at the hands of those who are called to serve and protect….

Be safe y’all

Phenomenal Woman…That’s Me…

Phenomenal Woman…That’s Me…

Phenomenal…

“very remarkable; extraordinary”

This week has been an extremely tiring week. So here it is, Saturday afternoon ,I’ve poured myself a glass of wine, popped some popcorn and have cancelled all plans for this evening! This social butterfly is clipping her wings for the night.

As I sit here in a total relaxed state of mind, my mind ran on a poem by the great Maya Angelou ( 1928-2014) “Phenomenal Woman”. It reads:

Pretty women wonder where my secret lies.
I’m not cute or built to suit a fashion model’s size
But when I start to tell them,
They think I’m telling lies.
I say,
It’s in the reach of my arms,
The span of my hips,
The stride of my step,
The curl of my lips.
I’m a woman
Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That’s me.
I walk into a room
Just as cool as you please,
And to a man,
The fellows stand or
Fall down on their knees.
Then they swarm around me,
A hive of honey bees.
I say,
It’s the fire in my eyes,
And the flash of my teeth,
The swing in my waist,
And the joy in my feet.
I’m a woman
Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That’s me.
Men themselves have wondered
What they see in me.
They try so much
But they can’t touch
My inner mystery.
When I try to show them,
They say they still can’t see.
I say,
It’s in the arch of my back,
The sun of my smile,
The ride of my breasts,
The grace of my style.
I’m a woman
Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That’s me.
Now you understand
Just why my head’s not bowed.
I don’t shout or jump about
Or have to talk real loud.
When you see me passing,
It ought to make you proud.
I say,
It’s in the click of my heels,
The bend of my hair,
the palm of my hand,
The need for my care.
’Cause I’m a woman
Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That’s me.

I think this is a poem that all young women( especially women of colour) should read and let resonate within their souls.
Even the most confident of people have days when they look in the mirror and they don’t like what they see. Or don’t think they are good enough to match up to society’s standards. Let’s be honest, speaking as a woman of colour, the media doesn’t always paint us in a great light or give us the best role models to look up to ( i.e: the fist fighting, profanity laden, promiscuous  women of shows like “Basketball Wives” or “Bad Girls Club”.)
Unfortunately, role models like this seem to be the norm these days as opposed to great women like Dr Maya Angelou. Women are striving to “get money” and “land the richest baller” instead of getting an education and becoming a woman of formidable character.
But why is that? Why is it that some of us women choose to be validated by society, instead of inherently knowing that we are good enough. I too have struggled with this. I used to ( and still do at times) find it hard to accept that I’m good enough or that I’m worthy of my accolades or even worthy of love. Whenever something good happens, it’s like I’m waiting for the shoe to drop and all of it to be taken away because I don’t feel like I’m deserving of it.
Does anybody else find it hard to receive compliments? It’s not that I don’t appreciate them… It’s almost that I’m embarrassed to accept them. Again, why is that?
When i struggle with that concept I am inclined to re-read Psalms 139 specifically verses 13-14 which read:(https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Psalm+139&version=NIV)
13 For you created my inmost being;
you knit me together in my mother’s womb.
14 I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
    your works are wonderful,
    I know that full well.
I have to delight in the fact before I existed God had a plan for me. Little old me!  We often place of self-worth on the premise of what society thinks of us instead of looking at the bigger picture. God gave up his one and only child on a cross to die to save humanity. If that isn’t a reminder of how treasured we are then I don’t know what is!
Even on my lowest of days I have to give thanks simply because of that.
I’m reminded of a quote from the movie “The Help”  that simply states, “You is kind. You is smart. You is important”. I even encourage the kids in my class to wrap their arms around themselves and repeat this as often as they can! ( I do it too!)
Sometimes you have to look in the mirror and remind yourself You is kind. You is smart. You is important…. Phenomenal Woman… That’s You!! ❤
Shout out to all the phenomenal women in my life! Love you dearly!
xoxo
